If you haven't read it yet, go back and have a look; it's packed with handy tips that'll help you create a budget and kick-start your vacation savings in no time.

Now, let's talk about how to fill up that savings account, despite the whirlwind of family life and with no side hustle in sight. Ready for it? Bring the kids on board!

Saving Money in a Piggy Bank!

In my experience, when kids are excited about a goal – be it a magical trip to Walt Disney World, a dreamy journey to Ireland, or any adventure their imaginative minds can conjure up – their enthusiasm and commitment is contagious! Plus, a fun side effect: fewer tantrums over the flashy toy aisles at your regular Target run.

Getting kids involved in saving is not just about swelling up that vacation fund, it’s also about instilling lifelong money-management skills. #momscoringbigtime

The Budget Challenge: Make budgeting a fun game! Set allowances for your routine expenses, like groceries, meals out, fuel, etc. Then, compete to see how many bucks you can save. Whatever is left at the end of the month turns into a victory deposit into your vacation fund

The $5 Club: This is one of my favorite games. Each time you get a $5 bill, straight into the vacation envelope it goes!

The Power Savers: Get everyone into the habit of conserving energy. Turning off lights and electronics when not in use can turn into a savings thrill! Keep score and celebrate the extra savings it brings.

Track to Triumph: Make a big deal about your vacation savings with a visible tracker. Stick it in your family's hub, like the kitchen, and let each progress bar fill up with excitement and anticipation.

Junior Contributions: Let your kids channel their inner entrepreneurs. Whether it's a cheerful lemonade stand for the younger ones or part-time jobs for the older ones, let them help fund their dream vacations while learning about money and business. Bonus: they get to enjoy the pride of contributing to the family goal.

I remember a time when my kids embarked on a coin collection mission. All spare change found its way into a jar. As the jar kept filling up (and growing in size), their excitement bolted. Cashing those rolls of coins just before the trip was a pre-vacation party in itself. And oh, the joy they had choosing their Disney souvenirs with their earnings.

So, what savings idea do you think will turn your kids into mini money maestros? Guess what? You're not alone. Better still, I have the perfect roadmap to navigate these financial crossroads while keeping your travel dreams alive.
Any financial guru worth their salt will tell you - it all begins with a good budget. Now, before you run a mile, hear me out. Budgeting doesn’t have to be as scary as scaling Everest

Let's break it down:

Step one: Kick off with calculating your income. If you have a steady salary, it's a breeze. For those with a variable income, like yours truly, working with estimates or averages will be your go-to strategy.

Step two: It's time to get up close and personal with your fixed and variable expenses. My preference is a biweekly budget, but if going month-to-month works for you, that’s wonderful.

Start your budget journey by rounding up your fixed expenses, like your mortgage or rent, phone and utility bills, car payments, and minimum debt repayments. Once you've got a handle on this, it's time to subtract these figures from your income. What you’re left with is your pot for variable expenses!

This part’s a bit of guesswork, but you've got this! Estimate your variable expenses, such as groceries, fuel, recreational costs, kids' activities, and of course, pet pampering. Review this at the end of each month or pay period to understand your spending patterns.

Step three: Achieve a zero balance on your budget. This is where the magic happens. If you’ve got loose change left after all your expenses are covered, it's time to pile it into your savings or further reduce your debt. In the world of finance, we call this the zero-based budgeting method.

If you already have a smooth-running budget mechanism, that's fabulous! Just tie in your savings goal to your current budget and designate an amount every month (or biweekly) towards your 'Shine under the Disney fireworks fund.'

Remember, savings and debt pay-offs should be at the top of your plan.

But, wait, there's more! Let's supercharge that vacation fund with these savvy tips:

Tip #1: If you’ve just cleared a payment obligation, like a car loan or credit card, reign in the urge to breathe easy. Instead, redirect that same payment toward your vacation savings account. It's like you're paying yourself for all the fun awaiting!

Tip #2: To keep the vacation savings untapped, set up a dedicated account and schedule automatic transfers. I highly recommend opening a high-yield savings account where your money does some additional heavy lifting. Look at banks like Ally, Capital One 360, or Dollar Savings Direct for easy set-up.

Tip #3: Declare all "surprise" money as dedicated vacation fund boosters. Think tax refunds, work bonuses, mystery checks, and even that $10 bill you found inside your winter coat! Make all these unexpected treasures part of your vacation fund.

Now here's the ultimate hack to saving big on your trip: Commit to it NOW! It's no secret that as time passes, prices skyrocket. So why stall when we can start planning your dream vacation right away.
Start by scheduling a call with yours truly. Let's embark on the journey to making your travel dreams come true, one budget plan at a time!

Dreaming alongside you!

Unlock the Secret to a Happier Life

https://www.jmorristravel.com/blog/unlock-the-secret-to-a-happier-life

https://www.jmorristravel.com/blog/unlock-the-secret-to-a-happier-life#comments

Disney Family

Disney Special Needs Travel

Family

Family Travel

Multi Gen Travel

Planning

Special Needs Travel

Travel Tips

Universal Family

Universal Orlando

Hello again,If I could let you in on a secret that could potentially amplify your happiness and rejuvenate your life, would you be interested? Everywhere we turn, there are articles advising on how vacations can boost productivity, improve focus, recharge our energy, and even enhance our sleep. But alas, the allure of work often causes these precious off days to evaporate.

Consider vacation days as a health tonic for your well-being - trust me, their magic is undeniable! They serve as an oasis in our hustle, a spa retreat for our minds, reinvigorating, refocusing, and recharging every cell in our bodies. The result is simple yet profound: increased happiness.

There's even Project Time Off, a non-profit committed to proclaiming the benefits of time off, encouraging employers to let their employees rejuvenate, and heralding the last Tuesday of January as the annual National Plan for Vacation Day! How brilliant is that?

I seize this day to sketch out my annual calendar, plotting every getaway, each road trip, and those priceless date nights and hangouts with my squad. Having these on my calendar is like buying a ticket to guaranteed joy - it's bound to happen!

To make travel a priority, bookmark it in your calendar today. Ask for those leaves, even if the destination is still a mystery. Just reserve that slot for some well-earned exploration.

Now, if you have school-goers at home, align your plans with their academic calendars. Look at their breaks, and consider pivotal dates that require your availability at home. Two years since our home was ringing with school buzz, my schedule remarkably hangs onto those school-year constraints.

For instance, my son and husband participate in the annual Special Olympics Softball in Southern Georgia, coinciding with the start of our county's Fall Break. So, why not nudge that trip further into Orlando, possibly touch base at Universal, or even set sail from Port Canaveral? Who can resist a strike of travel inspiration?

Don't miss out on multi-gen adventures, too. Including school breaks in our plan still matters to our evolving clan.

And you shouldn’t forget those breather moments. My husband, having switched from a traditional job to working independently, can adjust his schedule for our next journey. His mantra is as heartening as it's simple: "Just tell me where to be and when!"

Before anything takes life in my official Google or family calendars, I make sure to mull over, shuffle, and secure those plans. You might think the timing's never right for that dream trip, caught up in the whirlwind of daily life and unexpected expenses. Yet, waiting for that 'perfect' moment might mean missing out on precious, life-enhancing experiences. Travel isn't just an escape; it's a way to enrich your life and those of your family members, teaching us invaluable lessons about the world and ourselves.

You see, prioritizing family travel isn't a puzzle -- it's a choice. In a time when it's so easy to let our deepest priorities slip through our fingers, it's crucial to remember what truly brings meaning and joy into our lives. For me and my family, travel is this incredible equalizer. It's our way of being just us — a unique, vibrant tapestry of personalities, including a brave Traumatic Brain Injury survivor who teaches me more about life than anyone else. Our travels allow us to step beyond the confines of labels and stereotypes, to find a place where we're not 'different' but simply human.

If your desire to travel burns bright because it promises a deeper connection, a breaking down of barriers, and the pure joy of discovery, then you're on the right path. (I do NOT coach on how to apply or CHEAT they SYSTEM!) This is a service I reserve for my Guests that pay my planning service fee.

Benefits of the DAS Pass are a shorter wait time and personalized service while maintaining discretion for the entire family.

-Lightening Lanes (formerly called Fast Passes) - This is the old standby for short wait times at Disney. While it has undergone a major renovation since the pandemic, as well as a few price increases, it can be a marvel for guests with disabilites if they are willing to pay for it. And when that one ride is a make or break for the whole trip. the cost of the Individual Lightening Lane is well worth it!

-Companion Restrooms - These are scattered across the parks and are easy to locate on your My Disney Experience app. They provide extra space and are adapted for Special Needs.

Castle as seen from Ferry on approach

Universal Orlando: Cinematic Adventure for Everyone

-Attraction Assistance Pass - This is administered through a third party, IBCCES (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards). The easiest way to get started is by downloading the IBCCES app onto your smart phone and uploading the information that it asks for. Once you are approved, the approval is sent to Universal and you will be sent an email. That email will ask for when you are visiting. You will recieve a phone call very close to your visit (usually within a week of your visit).

After this phone call you will get a number and your card will be attached to the app. You show that to Guest Services and they will prepare your AAP and explain how it works.

Because of the misuse of the system, you can no longer go to Guest Services and request a Assistance Pass. This misuse of the system is rampant and creates a serious problem as our special needs kids reach adulthood and aren't able to advocate on their own. (Stepping off my soapbox)

-Express Pass - This is by far the best way to navigate Universal Orlando! At the time of this writing, there is only one attraction that it does not work for. It basically cuts the posted wait time at least by half. No preplanning required. You want to Ride VelociCoaster and the wait time is 40 minutes, you show your Express pass and your wait time is closer to 20 minutes or less.

There are two ways to get the Express Pass, one is to purchase them. You can purchase them in your package, when you purchase your tickets, or the most expensive way is to purchase them in the park. Just know that in busy times, they do run out. Only a set number are sold per day. Also know that the price goes up depending on how busy the day is. I've seen them at $300+ per person at the gates last October. By far the lleast expensive way to get Express Passes is by staying at a Premier Resort. These Unlimited Express Passes are included in the price of your room for everyone staying in your room. Magic Math is my specialty!

-Quiet Spaces - Universal offers quiet zones where families can take short breaks from sensory overload.

Attraction Assistance Pass

The wonder and excitement that theme parks provide should be accessible to all. we learned as a military family with car traveling. In the military, your vacation or ‘leave’ started at midnight. There was a mentality that you didn’t want to miss a single second of that precious time, so we always left at exactly midnight. Or more accurately a few minutes afterward. The few minutes it took my husband to go to the office, sign out, and get back home. The car would be packed and the kids would be in their jammies and in the car ready and waiting.

So, driving through the night to our destination always meant by the time we got to our destination (usually grandma’s house) the kids were up and ready to eat! That’s not to say that timing isn’t important. Weekends, especially around holidays, are busier than regular weekdays. School breaks are busier than non-school breaks. Of course, not every school system follows the same school break schedule, so there is pretty much some school system out pretty much every day. Also, weekends are more expensive than weekdays, both in ticket prices and room prices. So, if it fits into your family’s schedule, try to avoid them.

On this question, my best advice is to find a time that works best for your family, and if you are somewhat flexible, let your Travel Professional know. Sometimes a promotion might help take the sting out a bit.

Along the same lines of when to go, remember that Universal uses dynamic pricing - meaning that as the tickets sell, the prices go up. Purchase early for the best value. But with special needs kids, you really do need to plan early - especially for the first trip!

Next, let's talk medication. Make sure you have spoken with your doctor and have all the medication your family needs for the trip. Sometimes the doctor will want to make a change in a child’s medication, but knowing there is a big trip coming up they may change their mind. Depending on the child and the child’s medical needs, a change in medication can cause changes in a child’s behavior or condition that may be masked by the sheer excitement or stress of the trip.

Also, make sure your doctor’s office has the phone number and address of a pharmacy close by your hotel (or one that delivers) in case any changes in medication or if medication is accidentally left at home. Since we almost always made our shirts, we always made it fun to discuss what we want our shirt to say for each park or each restaurant. After a while my daughter got pretty good at designing our shirts, and the dresses that went with them. (Yes, we were THAT family!)

For the Special Needs child, we worked on storyboards and Picture books in our homeschool. As an adult, he still only reads on a 2nd-grade level, so these were important, for him to know what was going to happen as well as what he WANTED to happen! We still do a relaxed itinerary for each day. Not a turn-by-turn, but a 'these are the rides we want to do before lunch' and 'these are the rides we want to do after lunch' sort of itinerary. We set the expectations and then make adjustments as we need to.

It is also important for the parents to set their own expectations. Know that there is no such thing as a perfect theme park vacation. Everyone’s idea of perfection is different! We don’t measure by perfection, but rather successful. Our trips are successful if everyone gets to ride their top two rides during the trip at least once. If they got to ride more than two of their favorites or more than once, then it was a huge success! We don’t count meltdowns. (from kids or parents!)

Knowing how your child handles stress will help you to determine how many breaks you may need. A good idea is to add in more breaks than you think you will need, and use them as needed. Some days you will need more. Some days you will need less. Just like at home, you have to be flexible.

At both Disney and Universal, they have sort off 'built-in' breaks. There are both scheduled and unscheduled events happening on the streets. Some are shows, skits, artists, or maybe even unscheduled characters walking through. We always find time to find a bench and sit for a while. You never know what or who you might see.

A good plan is to have a few rides that are important to the majority of the family and try those first. Taking breaks as needed. Then add in more of the ‘second tier’ of importance. We quickly found that as Mr D got older, he was much better at handling the waits if he had something to keep him occupied. For him, it was his iPod. We went from silly Disney and Sesame Stree music to more rock n roll as he got older. But as long as he was occupied, the need for breaks decreased. They never left, and even as an adult, we still need them!

Luckily, all the parks have places that can be used as a quiet space for rests, but we have found that when he was younger, Mr D preferred to have a stroller with a cover. He would put the cover over himself and ‘hide’ from the world for a few minutes and then be ready to go.

When no safe place to calm down can be found, sometimes a stroller with a cover can be used as a claming station

Both Disney and Universal now have an accessibility card that needs to be acquired ahead of time. For Disney, the DAS Card is applied for between 2 and 30 days before your trip. While Universal uses the IBCCES Accessibility Card to apply for their AAP card. Both have their own method of application and have differing requirements. Your Travel Professional can help you with either of these. One important thing to note - You can pick up the Disney DAS in the park without pre-application (but will not have access to the pre-selection rides per day - only one at a time) but the AAP at Universal MUST have the IBCCES Accessibility Card pre-done as well as the phone call!

Attraction Assistance Pass from Universal Orlando

While I understand that the above information is a bit vague, it is that way for a reason. In the past, many people have given out information that is a bit too much like ‘coaching’ on how to get an assistance pass. As a result, many people who don’t need one, are getting them. Making it harder for those who actually need it to get it. And I realize it can be a scarey process on your first time applying for one - which is why, I suggest you have a Travel Professional help with your Special Needs Travel.

While we will NOT tell you what to say, we will assure you that the process is not as daunting as you might think and is there to help your family not to hinder you in having a great time in the parks. We can explain how the process works in each park, both in applying and once approved, how to maximize the pass for your specific trip.

Back to those breaks and rests - make sure they are fun and keep the child occupied. They are not a punishment. The child is overstimulated and needs a break. Bring a toy, a book, a snack, something they will enjoy for a 3-10 minute break away from the hustle and bustle. Mr D loved to color. We brought colored PENCILS in a plastic bag (Don’t bring crayons! They will melt!) and a small Disney coloring book.
